Know Your Why
Changing careers in your 40s can be hard and frustrating. You feel like you are competing with a younger generation and the overeducated. I am here to tell you: put all of that aside and focus on you and what you have to bring to the table. Understanding your why is important because it helps you know why you want to change careers. Some reasons are for more money, to gain advanced skills, and or burnout. The list can go on; just make sure you are doing it for the right reasons. Sometimes the grass isn’t greener on the other side.
Know Your Transferable Skills
Understanding your transferable skills is important, especially if you have or don’t have a degree. How to change careers in your 40s? What are you good at, and what would a company love? This is just an example. You have worked in retail for over three years, and you have gained great customer service skills. Now you are ready to leave retail and have a more set schedule and move into an office setting. You have found a position, and it’s an admin position, and one of the qualifications is excellent customer service skills. Remember, you are currently providing customer service in your retail job. Yes, it is a different setting, but you are still providing customer service. Knowing this, you have a good selling point during your interview.
